An apology and a retraction
In August 2009 BJJ Blue Belt Craig de la Mare registered the trademark: The New Zealand Federation Of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (no 811287). from the IPO
Recently he has threatened us with legal action for using “these words in conjunction with each other” on all we do.
I also place on record that you are not the Official Federation for New Zealand and by claiming this you are misleading the public. You are requested to notify anyone who has been mislead by your false advertizing [sic] including placing an advert in a National News Paper and placing the above on the website and any other place were you have made such false claimbs [sic].
Craig de la Mare
NZFBJJ
This website will remove all reference to the word ‘federation’ and any inference left at the end of today is purely accidental and will be rectified upon notification.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a Martial Art that has build it’s World Wide reputation on action not words. Everyone practising BJJ in New Zealand knows it’s strength lies in the ability of it’s practitioners to prevail in physical conflicts, no matter the rules.
The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belts listed on this website: Douglas Santos, Paulo Oliveira, Pedro Fernandes, Geoff Grant and Steve Oliver are not lawyers, they have dedicated their lives to BJJ, they are Legitimate Black Belts in the Art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
All our time, resources and money are currently being poured into finding sponsors and funding to assist the winners of New Zealand’s most prestigious Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition get to Abu Dhabi and we will not be fighting Craig de la Mare’s demands. In fact, by registering the TM he is well within his rights to make these demands of us.
Whatever we are called, the fact remains we represent New Zealand’s top schools and organisations in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Douglas Santos Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Sorriso Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Tu Kaha Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Gracie Barra and Will / Machado! BJJ Blue Belt Craig de la Mare, through his legal threats, has done Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in NZ a great favour by strengthening the bond between the countries largest schools and organisations.
It’s just a word. It changes nothing. We will still run the biggest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions. We will still promote Brazilian Jiu Jitsu legitimately on all media. We will still award legitimate Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Ranks. We will still continue to grow this art of ours.

World Cup News: Douglas Santos
The second of 11 international qualifiers for the Abu Dhabi Pro was held in Auckland city – AUT North Shore on Sunday 22th of November. For the first time, New Zealand could show-off its potential to the world in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Two champions will be travelling for free to compete in Abu Dhabi in April next year and another eighteen competitors qualified including the New Zealand Director Douglas Santos to represent NZ in The Abu Dhabi Pro, the world’s richest and most prestigious Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament offering over $200,000 in cash and prizes.
All this became possible thanks to the personal support of his Highness the Supreme Prince and Commander In Chief of the United Arab Emirates National Army, H. H. Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
100 competitors and a good several hundred spectators came to watch and compete for the first time in the NZWorld Cup level competition took place at AUT Recreation center, The competition start with the Opens divisions.
In the white/blue belt open division there was a show of technique and heart . The Pacific Islanders showed why they are called Warriors and after a war the semi-finals was defined.
Brandon Ropati and Vance Miller made a very exciting final with Brandon proving size does matter having 10kg more on Vance taking the big prize.
The most exciting division of the day was the purple, brown and black belts. Graham Wearea and Hemi Pou both Purple belts were ready for the final. Both were very strong and technical at the same time, Graham with a very dangerous arm lock from the guard passed by the black belt Murray Bellenden and with the same arm lock beat Hemi Pou to get his free ticket to Abu Dhabi , one more Maori going to The Emirates.
Since the two free tickets had been claimed the remaining competitors had the hopes to qualify for the overseas tournament, the big fights continued division by division, competitors still determined to get a place to represent NZ at the World Cup. Once again a fantastic show of talent, technique and passion from this side of the Pacific. Some of the competitors after the Opens still found the energy to fight for the weight division Brandon Ropati showed a good demonstration of this and won not only the Open division for white/blue but also his own weight division. The final results another 18th competitors very hungry to fight in Abu Dhabi and may be make the first Brazilian JiuJitsu with GI (Kimono) champion from NZ.
The final results end up like that:

FIJJA World Professional Jiu Jitsu Cup NZ – One world One fight
ABU DHABI PRO SPORT AND BUSSINES
Once we have clarified the actuation of the Abu Dhabi Pro Sports and Business, we can take the chance to talk about the opportunities that become possible with the realization of the World Professional Jiu-jitsu Cup. Establishing effective connections between the governments of the countries where the trials will take place and the government of UAE is one of the objectives proposed by the Abu Dhabi Pro. Its idealization takes into account this interaction, through the jiu-jitsu, promoting business and relationship among different parts of the world and the UEA.
INTRODUCTION:
Jiu-jitsu is the fastest growing martial art of the world. Its spreading happens in an exponential rate in countries with continental dimensions like the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, the United States, Japan, Australia and Spain. Its practice is, gradually, looking for professionalization, due to the revelation of new athletes each year, making the competitive level of the fight fiercer. Promote this new and contagious sport is the purpose of FIJJA FIJJA – FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL JIU-JITSU ASSOCIATION.
FIJJA 2009 – WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2009 World Championship organized by FIJJA has already been a success, with its repercussion in the media and, mainly, by the participation of the best athletes of the world. Its realization is a landmark on the sport’s calendar and a divider to the athletes who wanted to get professional in the sport. The event took place in April 30th, 1st and 2nd of May 2009 in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates.
THE FIJJA MISSION
The main idea proposed by FIJJA is to make possible that jiu-jitsu athletes are able to live from the sport, turning the modality into a professional sport. Its objective is to promote jiu-jitsu as a professional sport, aiming at the development of the athlete’s career, building the best and biggest jiu-jitsu competition federation of the world. Hence, the jiu-jitsu athletes get not only the prestige of taking part of big competitions, but mainly, the financial backrest in order to go on forward in the sport through paid awards. FIJJA is already working hard to, in a near future, raise the jiu-jitsu to the condition of Olympic Fight.
IDEATION
Living for almost a decade in the United Arab Emirates, in Abu Dhabi, where he firstly introduced the jiu-jitsu, Carlos Santos, alias Carlão, created a real culture for the jiu-jitsu when implementing it in the Army training and as a school subject in Abu Dhabi. Moreover, it can be added to this the fact that the Government of Abu Dhabi is one of the biggest sports investor and financial supporter in the world. Facing these opportunities, Carlão has foreseen his first insights of what the FIJJA would be.
FIJJA 2010 – ABU DHABI PRO WORD TRAILS:
In 2010 the trails to the world championship will be duly incorporated under the seal of FIJJA through the sponsoring of considerable awards, as well as the technical capacitating in order to standardize such events to the FIJJA level. The objective is that in 2010 the world championship will be not just an event, but a circuit of tournaments which form a worldwide FIJJA championship. There will be twelve stages around the world, with the events taking part in all continents, including the African one. The proposed model follows the example of other renowned sports: Formula 1, Surfing (WCT), Tennis (APT Tour) and other.
VISION
FIJJA a global company, with headquarters in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates and a head office in Porto Alegre, Brazil, has also official representatives in all continents and in the main countries where jiu-jitsu is practiced. FIJJA aims to explore the sport “jiu-jitsu” creating a market where it could turn into a profitable business, generating financial return to the institution as well as to its competing athletes, moreover, generating society values as a whole through the incentive to a sportive professional practice.
INCENTIVE AND SUPPORT
FIJJA is propelled by the support of the government of Abu Dhabi, through the personal support of Your Highness the Supreme Prince of Abu Dhabi and Commander in Chief of the United Arab Emirates National Army, H. H. SHEIKH MOHAMED BIN ZAYED AL NAHYAN and his son H. H. SHEIKH SAYED BIM MOHAMED BIN ZAYED AL NAHYAN, who readily embraced this idea, allowing this project to be structured with the seriousness and solidity needed to the execution of this grandiose undertaking.
Sad news from Gracie Barra Sydney
Members of The BJJ NZ would like to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Marcelo Rezende after the sudden passing of Nathalia Rezende, Marcelo’s wife. The team at GB Sydney have been rocked by Nathalia’s passing and the GB New Zealand crew are in ’shock’. I’m sure that more information will be available in the coming days, but for now please take a moment to think of your loved ones and those closest to you.
Kia Kaha, you are in our thoughts
